Media workshop: how to popularise a message in the (mainstream) media
Dissimination of knowledge via the traditional and new media is a must for every aspiring researcher. It’s not everybody’s piece of cake. However communication with big audiences is becoming more and more relevant in our mediated society. In this workshop you will be given the basics on how to do so.
The workshop starts with an introduction on how media work, goes into the dangers and advantages of media performances and gives an insight into the editorial process of journalistic media-organizations. Furthermore you will be given practical tips on how to sell yourself and your work to a bigger audience: how do I stand out? What are the do’s and don’ts? How do I make sure I reach the right audience? Last but not least the workshop provides in several exercises to bring some of the basic into action.
About the workshop facilitator
Tobias van der Valk is a journalist and filmmaker. He worked for the Dutch radio program Foreign Desk, broadcasted on the radio station Radio1 (VPRO), for which he produced the prestigious radio series Café Europa. Furthermore he directed several televised documentaries, including Kür, which was part of the official selection at the Dutch Film Festival (NFF). He also founded and co-presented the weekly science radio show Science071 at the local radio station Sleutelstad FM in Leiden.
