AMS Research Engineer for the AMS – Social Urban Data Lab (1.0 fte)

Interested in developing novel data-driven solutions to metropolitan problems, and see them applied in the City of Amsterdam? Work with us in the AMS Social Urban Data Lab

About the Social Urban Data Lab
The Social Urban Data Lab (SUDL) focuses on the development of novel data science methods and technology for the analysis of urban interactions. In SUDL we create powerful digital reflections of urban interactions at scale from scarce and ambiguous data sources, by combining machine learning and data science with human computing and user modeling. We address a variety of metropolitan challenges that range from human mobility and migration to social relationships and spatial inequality.
SocialGlass, an exemplary urban analytics platform developed by the SUDL researchers can be viewed here.

Job description
To further advance our widely acknowledged work in the domain of urban data analytics, we are in search of a research engineer, who will engage in the design and development of novel algorithms and software components for urban analytics tools. The tools will help leverage, combine and enrich information from various data sources (e.g. social media, mobile phones, sensors etc.). This will also involve the creation of effective city dashboards. The research engineer will have the opportunity to work in a vibrant and dynamic environment, together with researchers of SUDL and Delft University of Technology (TU Delft). During this project the applicant will have the opportunity to see the outcome of the work applied in challenging use-cases related to the urban environment, and the people living in it.

This is a one-year, fixed-term renewable appointment.

About the AMS Institute
AMS Institute, the Amsterdam Institute for Advanced Metropolitan Solutions, is a public-private institute that sits at the crossover between industry, government, academia and the public.

Founded by Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Wageningen University & Research, Delft University of Technology, the City of Amsterdam, Shell, European Space Agency, Accenture, IBM, Port of Amsterdam, Cisco, Waternet, Alliander and KPN our mission is to free intelligence from its ivory tower and let it out into the world where it can do something useful.

Aiming to solve problems in metropolitan areas, we combine brainpower, data and knowledge from the fields of design, planning, life sciences, engineering, physics, mathematics, information technology and social sciences. Through facilitating and initiating (research)projects that ‘fix’ things we create practical solutions, products, businesses activity and workable plans that benefit urban progress.
