Femke creates learning environments where teams of professionals can learn on the job. By setting-up the AMS Academy for professional education, Femke is developing a new type of professional education that helps professionals obtain the right tools and skills to address challenges that cities are currently facing, while being inspired by MADE students, challenged by academia, and activated by entrepreneurial spirits.

Before working at the AMS Institute, Femke worked for twelve years at the Municipality of Amsterdam, most recently in its Innovation team and was responsible for the professional development of the Innovation team. Originally educated as a Landscape Architect at Wageningen University and Resarch, Femke began by designing parks and playgrounds. In the landscape she found her interest in people and the environment leading her to explore a career that reflected her dedication to Social Innovation. Femke is particularly interested in the Sharing Economy, New Democracy, Social Innovation and Innovation methodology.

In addition to her working life, Femke is a member of the supervisory board of sQuare.amsterdam, a foundation that helps vocational trained creatives to be independent as entrepreneurs and have a brighter start in the labour market.

She is also a member of the board of PopUpWerk Foundation and fulfills the role of secretary for this foundation. Rikko Voorberg is the director of PopUpWerk Foundation that creates new forms of activism by combining Christian values, Societal values and Art discipline to create social impact on human matters.

Foremostly, Femke is a passionate home cook and in love with Amsterdam.

“Creating a learning environment where everyone is a teacher. Either a student, a professor, an entrepreneur or a professional, all can learn from each sother at AMS Institute.”
