AMS Institute and Pakhuis de Zwijger join forces on a lecture series on metropolitan development and innovation! During the kick-off of this new series, we look at the challenges that urban population growth poses to cities. How can we sustain quality of life and a livable urban environment in increasingly overcrowded cities? And which role can scientific research play in solving these issues? Two academic talents will share their work and insights on the ways in which urban data science can help us better understand and organize city environments, and how social data can help us obtain more livable cities -and even a more livable world.
Nowadays, more than 50% of the world’s population is living in cities, and this number is only expected to increase more. The growth of the urban population puts pressure on both the urban environment and the people that move, work and live in it. How can we ensure sustainable, safe and resilient cities?
Two of our academic talents, Alessandro Bozzon and Achilleas Psyllidis, will explain how urban data science can help us to understand and tackle the challenges of modern-day cities. Or, more specifically, how social data (from social media as Twitter and Instagram) can help cities and citizens to enhance their ability to sense, interpret, and understand city environments. Doing so, they will give a live-demonstration of SocialGlass: a web-based platform (co-developed by Bozzon and Psyllidis) for urban data visualization and analytics, which they already used during big-scale events as Sail, Amsterdam Light Festival and GayPride.
Alessandro Bozzon is an assistant professor with the Web Information Systems group (AMS, TU Delft). He is also a faculty fellow with the IBM Benelux Center of Advanced Studies.
His research lies at the intersection of crowdsourcing, user modeling, and web information retrieval. He studies and builds novel Social Data science methods and tools. His goal is to help improving well-being and fostering inclusion by means of Web-based, personalized social computing systems that combine the cognitive and reasoning abilities of individuals and crowds, with the computational powers of machines, and the value of big amounts of heterogeneous data.
Achilleas Psyllidis is a postdoc researcher in Urban Data Science at the Web Information Systems group (TU Delft). He is also a postdoc research fellow of AMS Institute, specializing in urban data analytics and leading the projects of the Social Urban Data Lab (SUDL).
His expertise lies in the areas of geo-computation, statistical spatial analysis, GIScience, and urban data science. His current research focus is on the application of machine learning and neural networks to spatial data analysis and modeling, and on the knowledge extraction from high-dimensional and unstructured geo-social and temporal data using semantic web and linked data technologies. He designs and develops novel methods and tools for social urban data integration, visualization, and exploratory analysis. The goal is to provide planning stakeholders, researchers, and public authorities with quantitative and qualitative insights into the changing patterns of human interactions with the urban environment.
