Project: Solving the Urban Plastic Soup, Clean Inner City

Solving the Urban Plastic Soup is the first project to quantify and understand the sources, pathways, sinks, and potential reduction solutions of plastic pollution in urban waterways. By combining smart monitoring, available geospatial and hydrometeorological datasets, and expertise from stakeholders, we provide new insights into the “plastic metabolism” of Amsterdam’s waterways.

In Clean Inner City, we are developing an innovative monitoring approach to quantify the impact of (plastic) waste reduction measures. Using camera images/videos and AI, we quantify both pollution fluxes and concentrations, as well as the driving processes. This provides additional insights into why certain measures may have an impact and others may not.
