The greenhouse horticultural sector in the Netherlands is world-leading. The sector is highly innovative and continuously seeks new knowledge. This requires a strong horticultural chair group at Wageningen University.
Our mission is to conduct high-quality fundamental research and educate students. We aim to provide the scientific basis necessary for sustainable crop production and high product quality in horticulture.
We seek to explore and utilize plant physiology. Our research focuses on how physiological processes in crops, plants, and plant organs interact with the abiotic environment and how this affects crop production and product quality. Using a systems analytical approach, we translate questions from horticultural practice into fundamental research topics, aiming to explain underlying mechanisms. These questions may relate to improving yield, pre- and post-harvest quality, energy savings, and efficient water use. In this way, our research and education contribute to sustainably feeding the world with healthy, high-quality products.
