Emma van Veenen is a PhD Candidate at Wageningen University & Research. In her interdisciplinary research – combining philosophy of science, sustainable transition research and mobility research – she tries to identify which values and worldviews mobility research should prioritize when redesigning tools and methods to accelerate the transition to sustainable urban mobility. To do this, she analyses the values and knowledge (re)created in different mobility research paradigms and their tools. At AMS Institute, Emma is part of the research fellow community.

Emma’s interdisciplinary research reflects her interdisciplinary background in philosophy of science, political economy and her work experience as a researcher on mobility and public space at the Municipality of Amsterdam. At the municipality, she focuses on future mobility research, research on the Amsterdam ferries, and transitions research. An example is the research she did on (re)designing intersections from a social, just, and ecologically safe perspective.

Emma’s interdisciplinary research is also reflected in her supervision team that consists of Professor Dr. Eveline van Leeuwen (WUR/AMS), Professor Dr. Federica Russo (UU) and Assistant Professor Dr. Achilleas Psyllidis (TU Delft).

"I hope that my research contributes to green, social, and climate-resilient cities. Furthermore, cycling through Amsterdam every day is the most fun and motivating thing there is for an Amsterdam-based mobility and public space researcher."

“AMS institute is a unique place where you are able to combine philosophical questions, innovative ideas and practical outcomes.”
