About AMS Institute and the Smart Urban Mobility program
Amsterdam Institute for Advanced Metropolitan Solutions (AMS Institute) is the joint knowledge institute of TU Delft, Wageningen University & Research and MIT. Our mission is to develop a deep understanding of the city, design solutions to its challenges and integrate them into the city of Amsterdam. We believe that an ecosystem that enables continuous learning and propels innovation for cities is crucial to positive change. We create this environment by generating ideas, educating talent, and closely interacting with the evolving local reality of the city.

The institute’s research portfolio revolves around six urban challenges: mobility, energy, circularity, food, climate, and digitization. Our research is characterized by the so-called Living Labs and Test Beds, in which we carry out research directly in practice, apply knowledge and interact with users and stakeholders.

Smart Urban Mobility (SUM) is one of the themes of AMS Institute. With increasing numbers of people and goods, mobility plays a crucial role in future urban developments and is an important part of keeping the city of Amsterdam livable and accessible. Over the past few years there has been a shift in the field of mobility, with several transitions taking place. A transition towards more sustainable, shared and inclusive mobility. With the increased availability of mobility data, real-time traffic data and the full-scale adoption of digital technologies, cities are increasingly experimenting with digital mobility management tools, to improve the city’s mobility system, enhance mobility flows and repurpose the public space. Together with our partners the Smart Urban Mobility (SUM) team of AMS Institute works on innovative solutions for cities’ mobility challenges. We do that among others through various research and innovation projects in an (inter)national context.

Who are you?

  • You have an impact-driven mindset.
  • You can work in a multi-stakeholder environment.
  • You have a strong interest and past experience in mobility, data-driven innovations, digitalization, preferably with expertise in the field of traffic management.
  • You are capable of working independently, but enjoy working in a team where we challenge and support each other to move forward every day.
  • You love to work on content but are also expert in project planning, risk management and project reporting.
  • You are proactive and not afraid to chase people when you need their input or expertise.
  • You are a strategic thinker and do-er

Who are we?
We are a team of engineers, researchers, entrepreneurs, students, program developers, facilitators, and employees of the municipality. Together we close the gap between society and science on a daily basis. We are a community of about a hundred open-minded, motivated, ‘social nerds’ that want to create better cities for everyone.

When you work at AMS Institute, you do work that matters and have the freedom to do so. Few things are set in stone and opportunities are everywhere, giving you the flexibility to make your own job.

At the triple A central location next to Nemo and Central Station on the Marineterrein, you have the chance to implement science into the real urban context by working with the living lab methodology. Think of projects with tangible impact about subjects such as bike theft, circularity, quay walls and more.

When we are not busy facing different urban challenges, we like to have drinks after work and even go for the occasional swim at the inner harbour at the Marineterrein.

Diversity and inclusion
Diversity is vital for creating an impact on the city. The challenges we face in the city are big and complex. To solve them, we need to reflect the diversity of our society in our organization by being a safe place where everyone has the opportunity to develop themselves. A place where everyone feels valued. We appreciate the insight you can bring to our projects.
