Niels van Oort is an Associate Professor of Public Transport and Shared Mobility at Delft University of Technology and co-director of the Smart Public Transport Lab. His main fields of expertise are public transport planning and data-driven design, with a special interest in the passenger and societal perspective, service reliability, and multimodality. In addition to teaching multiple BSc and MSc courses and supervising over 150 students since 2012, Niels has supervised several PhD students and frequently publishes articles in international journals and trade magazines, as well as sharing findings in general media.
With over 20 years of experience as a senior consultant and strategic public transport planner, he has been involved in numerous public transport projects and continues to connect research and practice. He completed his PhD in 2011 and began working part-time at Delft University of Technology in 2012. Since 2018, he has been employed full-time at TU Delft.
