Gustaf is a research fellow at AMS Institute and a PhD candidate at the Urbanism department of TU Delft. He is involved in the Urban Comfort Lab project, where the multi-faceted effects and interactions between urban form and aircraft noise are investigated. His research focuses on the influence of urban form and greenery on aircraft noise annoyance.
The main aim of his research is to define and investigate the effect of a ‘quiet building side’ for aircraft noise. Road traffic noise is one of the drivers of building courtyard-style housing in Amsterdam. We have our bedrooms, balconies, and gardens ideally facing these courtyards, away from the noisy streets. While aircraft fly overhead, they follow a fixed set of paths in the sky. Using building orientation and form to shield bedrooms and gardens from aircraft noise, we can create a more comfortable living environment in urban airport regions.
“Schiphol does not want to shrink, while levels of noise complaints from aircraft increase in the Randstad. Urban design can be used to create liveable environments, and has an overlooked potential to reduce aircraft noise annoyance.”
