MozFest is no ordinary technical conference. It is a whirlwind of people and ideas, sparks of curiosity and connection, and an atmosphere that is vibrant, dynamic and full of positive energy. The festival features sessions that teach best practices in privacy, develop solutions to online disinformation and harassment, build open-source tools, support trusted AI innovations, and much more.

The Responsible Sensing Lab at MozFest
Technologies like smart sensors can help solve urban challenges. Innovations improve the quality of life and enhance safety, sustainability and livability. For example, optimizing mobility flows or to better use available capacity of energy infrastructures. On the other hand: novel technologies that collect and analyse data could have consequences for values such as autonomy, privacy, transparency and inclusiveness.

The Responsible Sensing Lab explores how to integrate society’s public and democratic values in the design of sensing systems in public space. It is a testbed for conducting rigorous and transparent research in order to create a responsible digital city.
Within the Responsible Sensing Lab academics, practitioners, computer scientists, policy makers, psychologists, designers and hardware experts are invited to connect and work together to (re)design, prototype, test and implement responsible sensing systems.

The RSL Workshop
Smart city systems rarely directly engage with citizens. Researchers and designers at the Responsible Sensing Lab are exploring ways to invite citizens, or any stakeholder, to interact with sensing systems. In this workshop, we will be discussing two projects that provide insights into what it means in practical terms to make a smart city system transparent, assessable and contestable.

The Responsible Sensing Lab is a joint effort of AMS Institue and the City of Amsterdam. It is part of the Responsive Urban Digitization program; a three year collaboration in which we closely work with experts at TU Delft Industrial Design Faculty.

During the workshop, we are hoping to yield valuable insights from different perspectives. We would love to integrate these insights to bring our challenges to a next level within our project.

The Responsible Sensing Lab will be hosting two sessions:

15 March, 2:30- 3:30 PM DISCUSSION
Responsible Sensing Lab session
| Thijs Turel | AMS Institute, Program Manager Responsible Digitization
| Coen Bergman | City of Amsterdam, CTO, Innovation Developer Public Tech
