CDIO (Conceive-Design-Implement-Operate) is a global network that discusses the future of engineering education. During the conference, engineering education innovations, research results and best-practices were shared with a world-wide audience. Topics that were highlighted during the conference were design education, challenge-based learning (CBL), assessment strategies, curriculum agility, (interdisciplinary) teamwork, and the design of the university of the future. Anita, our educational coordinator went to learn from other educational methods, but also to explain about the unique methods that are used in the Metropolitan Analysis and Design Engineering (MADE) Master of AMS Institute.

Anita presented about MADE; how MADE is thematically organized and linked to the six urban challenges of AMS Institute. She also explained how students can find their ‘path in the forest’ by focusing more on certain themes throughout the curriculum; if it is about urban data, entrepreneurship or policy.

During the workshops there were several discussions that resulted in some interesting output. For instance building in more room for electives, having coaches/mentors that help students in following a certain path during their curriculum. Some of the things that were mentioned are already part of the MADE program, which, ones more, emphasizes the unique programme we have at AMS Institute.

“Many themes are interesting to me and very relevant for our programme, such as students in the lead of their assessment, flexibility in study paths, and teamwork. In the MADE programme students are asked to take the lead over their learning processes and personal development, and work a lot in interdisciplinary teams as our students have a large variety of disciplinary bachelor backgrounds.””

Educational Coordinator MSc MADE

Overall, the conference brought such inspiration in further improving the MADE program, but also made the team realize how innovative the MADE programme is, of which the Institute and universities can be very proud.
