Throughout the European Union, approximately 5 million tonnes of food is wasted by retailers, 7 million tonnes by hospitality and 31 million tonnes by households. The Waste Framework Directive requires actors in each of these 3 settings to reduce this by 30% per capita. Pilot interventions exist to reach these targets, but they must be replicated and scaled to work for all citizens, including those experiencing food insecurity.
Foodwise conducts behaviour change interventions with supermarkets, municipalities and hospitality actors in our consortium countries (the Netherlands, Germany, Italy, Czechia and Portugal). The interventions are assessed against replication and scalability criteria so that they can be applied in the wider EU.
AMS Institute will conduct interventions with the Voedsel Strategie team at Gemeente Amsterdam so that results can inform policy.
Interventions begin in 2027, starting with a conscious shopping aisle to reduce food waste in retail settings and a toolkit to integrate emotional intelligence and behavioural feedback for municipality policies. Expected results should deliver a 30% per capita reduction of food waste per retail/hospitality/municipality setting.
Retail results are expected to scale from 1 to 20 supermarkets and interventions with the municipalities are expected to scale from local city-level policy to international EU-level legislation.
“Emissions created through food waste are entirely avoidable and should not co-exist in a world, where households are also experiencing food insecurity.”
