Bart van Arem was appointed full professor Transport Modelling at Delft University of Technology in 2009. He was head of the department Transport & Planning from 2010 till 2017. Since 2011 he has served as director of the TU Delft Transport Institute.

“Mono-disciplinary approaches to mobility, urban design and energy may provide quick-wins but will ultimately fail in making cities and regions sustainable and liveable.”

Will intelligent vehicles help solve congestion problems? High expectations rest on intelligent vehicles, yet the answer to this question is far from trivial. My research focuses on analysing and modelling the implications of intelligent vehicles. Such implications may pertain to human factors, traffic flow on roads and networks, travel behaviour, spatial and energy impacts and design of urban space. The research has a strong modelling and simulation component based on empirics using the Researchlab Automated Driving Delft and naturalistic real-world situations.

The quest for mobility solutions

Smart Urban Mobility

We don’t need to look that far in the future to see the mobility challenges of Amsterdam. The number of people visiting, living and working in Amsterdam continues to rise and big events such as EURO2020 and SAIL2020 will have a significant impact.
