The MSc MADE program is hosted at AMS Institute and is strongly integrated with the Research & Innovation, Urban Living Lab, and Entrepreneurship teams.
Program Description
The MSc MADE program is designed to tackle complex urban challenges through urban engineering, design, data science, entrepreneurial thinking, and social science methods. The program’s strong connection to Amsterdam’s innovation ecosystem offers students a unique blend of academic rigor and hands-on impact. The MSc MADE program prepares students to become inter- and trans-disciplinary researchers, with grounding in both theoretical and practical skills. MADE students will learn to understand and develop innovative and sustainable solutions for urban challenges.
Study Program Structure
The first year of the program focuses on building both theoretical and practical knowledge and skills through real-world application, learning by doing (i.e. challenge-based), and transdisciplinary education. In the second year of the program, students apply the knowledge and skills they learned in the first year through Living Lab projects and thesis research. These projects involve collaboration with both public and private partners with the aim of designing and implementing real-world interventions.

The Young Urban Engineers is a student-based consultancy connecting students with companies, municipalities, and NGOs to work on short- and long-term projects, delivering innovative and research-based solutions to urban and environmental challenges.

Who Should Apply?
The program is suited for motivated students, preferably with a technical or scientific background. They should be interested in making cities more resilient, regenerative, and just through socio-technical solutions, design, and collaboration. This program requires a relevant Bachelor’s degree, however, specializations, minors, relevant technical/natural science courses, and working experience are also highly valued. The MSc MADE Program is looking for students who have the following:
- Attitude: Self-motivated, committed to change, driven to make real-world impact, and show creative, critical, and interdisciplinary thinking.
- Program Readiness: Demonstrate an understanding of the MSc MADE Program including a desire for a socio-technical program that focuses on both process and content.
- Academic Skills: Professional communication, proof of data literacy, and experience with (or desire to learn) programming, GIS, and/or statistics.
Note: Students must complete the Sustainable Urban Development MOOC in preparation for the program.
