What You Will Learn

You will learn how to act in an environment where a variety of systems, networks, and human actors shape the metropolis and the flows in the city. As a student you make use of new technologies, enabling a much faster and more accurate use of data in cities, and at larger scales than ever before.

The two-year MSc MADE program is a combination of institution and online education, thorough training in academic skills and project work. This is all connected to the research portfolio of Wageningen University & Research, Delft University of Technology, and their industrial and societal partners and brought together in AMS Institute.

The Program

The first year of the program focuses on building both theoretical and practical knowledge and skills through real-world application, learning by doing (i.e. challenge-based), and transdisciplinary education. Students furthermore work on a variety of projects that connect students to real life cases, business, the city, and its citizens.

Knowledge Videos: Students work on defining and understanding the metropolitan challenges Amsterdam is facing today, this video series allows them to share their observations on topics such as mobility, tourism, food, water, waste, energy, and health.

Metropolitan Solutions: As part of the Metropolitan Solutions course, students give advice to real-life case owners for the AMS Institute network. They take on a role as consultants and give advice on urban challenges.

Entrepreneurial Skills Pitches: For the courses Entrepreneurship and Data Visualization, the students pitch their concepts for innovative solutions for urban challenges to an interdisciplinary jury of professionals from the AMS Institute network.

Living Lab Course: Students apply the knowledge and skills they learned in the first year, in Urban Living Labs. They collaborate with public and private partners to design and implement real-world interventions.

The master's program will be completed with a thesis. This includes a theoretical framework, advancing analytical methods, and explicating conceptual approaches.
